(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) has recently been selected to receive a Gold Peak Performance Award from the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA). NACWA’s Peak Performance Awards program recognizes public wastewater treatment facilities for their outstanding compliance records during 2007. Gold Awards honor treatment works that have achieved 100 percent compliance with their NPDES permit for an entire calendar year; Silver Awards recognize facilities that have received no more than five NPDES permit violations per calendar year.
Since 1997, at least one WASD wastewater treatment facility has won either a Gold or Silver Peak Performance Award from NACWA every year. This year’s Gold Award winner is the Central District Wastewater Treatment Plant on Virginia Key.
“The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department’s Central District Wastewater Treatment Plant is an outstanding example of environmental efforts. NACWA is honored to showcase the achievements of the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department and our nation’s public wastewater utilities through the Peak Performance Awards Program,” said Ken Kirk, NACWA’s Executive Director.
“The Gold Peak Performance Award represents the hard work and dedication our employees bring to their jobs each day,” said John Renfrow, WASD Director.
WASD is the fifth-largest public water utility and the eighth-largest public sewer utility in the United States, based on population served. NACWA represents the interests of the nation’s publicly owned wastewater treatment works, serving the majority of the sewered population in the United States, collectively treating and reclaiming over 18 billion gallons of wastewater every day.
