    Volunteer at Programs for Children & Adults with Disabilities

    ChildrenAfter School & Seasonal Camp Programs for Children with Disabilities

    The Leisure Access Division offers summer camps and after-school programs for children and adults ages 6 to 22 with disabilities. The programs are Monday through Friday from 2 p.m. - 6 p.m.

    FencingSports Development Programs for Children with Disabilities
    The Leisure Access Division offers a variety of programs where volunteers can really make a difference. 

    If interested in volunteering with the park staff in any of the programs listed below, please call the contact person to sign up for the program of choice:

    • Power Soccer - Goulds Gould's Gym
      Fridays  2 p.m. - 4 p.m. Contact: Jody Cox, 305-752-4966
      Description: This program is designed for power chair users ages 14 through adult with a focus on team formation and practice of a power chair sport.
    • Jr. Wheelchair Sports - Club Gould's Gym
      Saturdays 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Contact: Jody Cox, 305-752-4966
      Description:  This program is designed for children 9 years of age and older with physical disabilities. This is a rotating sports clinic engaging in basketball, tennis, fencing, cycling and golf.
    • Wheelchair Tennis - "Big 5" Tennis Center
      Saturdays  9 a.m. - 11a.m. Contact: Jody Cox, 305-752-4966
      Description: This program is designed for children 9 years of age and older with physical disabilities; focuses on tennis instruction for the children.
    • Goalball - YET Center
      Saturdays  2 p.m. - 5 p.m. Contact: Zarron Brown, 305-234-1673
      Description: This program is designed for individuals 14 years of age and older with visual impairments. This event is for the purpose of team practice.
    • Friday Fencing Club - Tamiami Park
      Fridays  5:30 p.m. - 7 p.m. Contact: Arlene Bouza-Jou, 305-222-2128
      Description: This program is designed for children and adults 10 to 20 years of age with physical disabilities. This event focuses on fencing instruction.
    • On Guard for Autism - Coral Estates Park
      Tuesdays  5:30 p.m. - 7 p.m. Contact: Kim Fowler, 305-226-1622
      Description: This program is designed for children with autism 6 years of age and older. This event focuses on a variety of sports.

    BasketballPrograms for Adults
    The Leisure Access Division offers a variety of programs where volunteers can really make a difference.

    • Wheelchair Basketball Team - Miami Springs Rec. Ctr.
      Time: TBA Contact: Ingrid Berges, 305-752-4966
      Description: This is a competitive team environment for adults with physical disabilities.  The season starts in August and ends in February.
    • Tea & Tai Chi - Weswind Lakes Park
      Tue. & Thu. 9:45 a.m. - 11a.m. Contact: Zarron  Brown, 305-234-1673
      Description: This program works on improving balance and flexibility, and helps reduce stress through slow flowing movements.
    • Wheelchair Tennis - Big 5 Tennis Club
      Saturdays  9 a.m. - 11 a.m. Contact: Jody Cox, 305-752-4966
      Description: This program is designed for adults with physical disabilities focusing on tennis instruction for the adult.
    • Fitness Swim - Palm Springs North Pool
      Mondays 12 p.m. - 2 p.m Contact:  Belinda Phillips, 305-752-4966
      Description: This program is designed for ages 14 and up with physical or visual disabilities focusing on learning to swim for health and fitness.

    • Low Impact Water Exercise - Tue. & Thu. 11a.m. - 12 p.m.
      Description: This is an aquatic exercise program for adults with arthritis and/or physical limitations.  The program runs from January to November.

    SwimActivities at A.D. Barnes Park/Leisure Access Center

    The Leisure Access Center at A.D. Barnes Park hosts a variety of activities targeting adults with disabilities.

    Swim Team 
    Ages 13 & up w/ mild developmental disabilities

    Teaches swim techniques and individuals from program participate in Special Olympics swim competition

    Water Exercises
    Adults with all abilities
    Low impact classes focusing on range of motion, strength and endurance
    Sports Saturday
    Ages 13 & up w/ mild developmental disabilities
    Rotating schedule of sports such as basketball, swimming, &track & field
    Basketball Team
    Ages 13 & up w/ mild developmental disabilities
    Learn basketball skills, drills, and individuals from program compete in the Special Olympics
    Saturday in the Park (SIP)
    Adults w/ educable/mild developmental disabilities
    A social program with planned community trips & indoor activities; work on life/safety skills  (3:1 ratio)
    Fun on Friday (FOF)
    Adults w/ educable/mild developmental disabilities
    A social program with planned community trips & indoor activities; work on life/safety skills  (3:1 ratio)
    Seasonal Camps
    Adults w/ educable/mild developmental disabilities
    Rotating schedule of activities in fitness, arts & crafts, community trips, life, safety & independence skills, decision making, and nutrition
    Recess Days

    Rotating schedule of activities in fitness, arts & crafts, community trips, life, safety & independence skills, decision making, and nutrition  (10:1 ratio)
    Morning ADT
    Adults with severe developmental disabilities
    Rotating schedule of activities in fitness, arts & crafts, community trips, life, safety & independence skills, decision making, nutrition  (10:1 ratio)
