At Miami-Dade parks throughout the County, Track and Field activities -- which have their beginnings in the Sports Development Program -- are a solid success. Youngsters, from the ages of 8 to 18, join individual park teams to play flag football, basketball, volleyball and to run track and field, coached and encouraged by experienced Department staff.
Competition starts with intramural contests, park team against park team, in all the sports, but especially in track and field. The best young athletes in track and field are chosen as members of the Miami-Dade Track Team, co-sponsored by private organizations and the Park and Recreation Department. Regulation running tracks, such as the ones at Goulds Park, Gwen Cherry Park and Carol City Park, are used by the Track and Field Team and by area high school coaches training their young charges for college track scholarships.
The Sports Development Program is open to everyone. Those boys and girls who win their successive trials and go on to the Miami-Dade Track Team often compete at the USA Sunshine State Games, the Pan American Games and other state and national meets. These track programs are free to the kids.
Miami-Dade Parks welcomes children and adults with disabilities in its Track and Field activities. If you need accommodation to participate, call 305-735-7847 (V/TDD).
