Sammy's Story
Sammy loves children and wants them to stay safe. He helps children know what to do if told to shelter-in-place. Sammy is happy when he knows you are safe in an emergency.
What is Shelter-in-Place?
During an emergency, you and your family may be asked to go inside and stay there until you're told it's safe to go outside again. Sheltering-in-place is meant to keep you safe during emergencies such as:
- Hurricanes or tornadoes
- Wildfires
- Release of dangerous or hazardous materials
How Will You Know When to Shelter-in-Place?
- You will hear a warning message on the radio or TV or even from a parent, teacher, or police officer.
How to be Prepared
- Know where your shelter-in-place room is. It should be an inner room with few or no windows, doors, or vents.
Sammy Says During Shelter-in-Place You Should:
- Find your parents/guardian, teacher, or other trusted adult and stay with them at all times.
- Go inside to the shelter-in-place room.
- Don't forget to bring your pets with you.
- Close and lock the windows and doors.
- Listen to the radio or TV for further instructions.
- Stay calm and be safe.
- Wait patiently until you hear the "all clear" signal or other instructions.
