    Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

    News and Upcoming Events

    • Calling all CERT Team Leaders! Please send your team rosters to the CERT Program Manager as soon as possible. CERT shirts and lanyards are available for CERT members, but they must be on your roster to receive their items. Don’t wait to receive your items, act now!
    • Do you have a CERT story you would like to share with the CERT community? Has your team assisted your community in a neighbor-helping-neighbor spirit? Send your story to the CERT Program Manager…who knows, you could be headline news on our Web site!!
    • Attention CERT Team Leaders! We’re in the processing of deploying a new CERT database which will allow you to view your team member roster. If you’re a current team leader, please e-mail us your name, phone number(s), and email address at cert@miamidade.gov and we will notify once a meeting/training date is established.” The link is https://arcgisinter.miamidade.gov/certapp/.  Change the message in the quotes to say something along the lines of training will be coming shortly for team leaders on how to use the new database to contact the members of your team.

If interested in any of the above, email envelope cert@miamidade.gov with name, phone number, and e-mail address.

    CERT Training Classes
The CERT Program has partnered with Miami-Dade College for all coursework, and classes are now being offered at the North and Kendall campuses. Interested CERT members must register on the Miami-Dade College Web site  as a student for this class. Remember, you must complete all three days to become a CERT member - there are no make-up days if you miss a day.

    MDC - North Campus:
    None

    MDC - Kendall Campus:
A class is tentatively planned for December 2009

Additionally, please add the following information regarding an upcoming Volunteer Opportunity to participate as a volunteer in a field exercise on both the CERT & Citizens Corp Web sites.
Click here to register for CERT courses.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.

CERT is about readiness, people helping people, rescuer safety, and doing the greatest good for the greatest number. CERT is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations where citizens will be initially on their own and their actions can make a difference. Through training, citizens can manage utilities and put out small fires; treat the three killers by opening airways, controlling bleeding, and treating for shock; provide basic medical aid; search for and rescue victims safely; and organize themselves and spontaneous volunteers to be effective.

If you would like to get involved in your local CERT, or would like additional information, please e-mail the Miami-Dade CERT Program Manager at cert@miamidade.gov
