Miami-Dade County is reclaiming water. In a few years, we hope to be recycling nearly half the water we use.
Wastewater and how we treat it isn't the most glamorous subject to talk about or even think about. But when you actually see and realize the process the water goes through, it's amazing.
Providing clean water is one of the most basic and important services this County provides. It is a service that is directly used by residents and visitors each and every day. We share our water supply with the Everglades. That is why projects like the High Level Disinfection at the South Dade Wastewater Treatment Plant are so important to our stewardship of our natural resources. Since breaking ground in April 2008, the High Level Disinfection project, which is part of our commitment to invest in our water system, has made great progress. This investment is not only providing hundreds of jobs in our County, it will protect the environment. Once this reclaimed water project is complete, it will recharge our groundwater with approximately 23 million gallons of reclaimed water every day.
We will be treating wastewater using the most advanced technology before we put it back into the ground. This plant is the first major phase of our long term plan to meet all of our future water supply needs through conservation and alternative sources.
The simple fact is we are more responsible about water usage today than ever before. The High Level Disinfection project is not just about going green or improving water quality, it is about ensuring that Miami-Dade County continues to be a vibrant place. Our County's commitment to clean water is as clear as water that comes out of your tap.
Sincerely,

Mayor Carlos Alvarez
