In the words of Jose Marti: "Man loves liberty, even if he does not know that he loves it. He is driven by it and flees from where it does not exist."
These words are truly fitting as we commemorate Cuban Independence Day, May 20. Since its recorded history began, Cuba has been struggling for its independence. Yet, despite its political turmoil, Cubans have always been passionate about life, liberty and justice.
When I came to the United States at the age of eight, I was too young to understand the intricacies of why my family had to leave our home. When I was old enough to understand why, I felt angry and saddened. But, I also felt proud of the way my parents put the interests of their children before anything else. I feel blessed to live in this country.
So, even though we are here today to commemorate the anniversary of Cuban Independence Day, personally, I am looking forward to the day where we will be celebrating Cuba's newfound freedom. Until that day comes, let us celebrate our Cuban culture.
Sincerely,

Mayor Carlos Alvarez
