The terrible events of September 11, 2001, moved all of us to come together in a remarkable spirit of unity and compassion. Eight years later, this day continues to evoke strong emotion serving as a reminder of how linked we truly are as Americans.
This year, President Obama is calling for a "United We Serve" National Day of Service and Remembrance. I can't think of a better way to pay tribute to the courageous men and women, who selflessly came to aid of their fellow man on 9/11. The "United We Serve" National Day of Service should inspire all of us to participate in our nation's recovery and renewal by giving back to our communities.
In Miami-Dade County, it's never been easier to give back by volunteering than through the “V” Initiative. Volunteering is how we, as a people, take responsibility for the place we call home and make a difference. Volunteers are ordinary people who achieve extraordinary things in their communities.
Whether it's through the "V" Initiative or another program, I urge everyone to dedicate some of their time to help others in our community on this National Day of Service and Remembrance.
Sincerely,

Mayor Carlos Alvarez
