Putting together a proposed budget to fill a $400 million budget gap was a painstaking, arduous task and one that our administration gave careful consideration. No matter how you look at it, there is no simple way to fill the gap.
To keep taxes at a minimum, the proposed budget keeps basic, core services intact, including public safety, but all departments are making cuts. Some very worthy programs and services will be impacted. While no one wants to see services reduced or taxes increased, something has to give.
With this proposed budget, the homesteaded property owner in a house of average value will see an additional $8.63 per year. Homeowners without a homestead exemption will save about $150.
The process is far from over. The Board of County Commissioners will determine if the proposed budget proposal is the right one for our residents. Public hearings are scheduled for September 3 and 17, beginning at 5:01pm, in the Commission Chambers at the Stephen P. Clark Center, 111 NW 1st Street.
I will be working with the Commission to make sure the final budget reflects what they are hearing from our residents. Ultimately, the budget should reflect what our community wants and is willing to pay for.
Sincerely,

Mayor Carlos Alvarez
