Recently, I spoke at the Annual Everglades Coalition Conference hosted by the National Parks Conservation Association. This alliance of local, state and national conservation and environmental organizations is dedicated to protecting one of our most precious resources.
All of us understand very clearly how development at the edge of the Everglades can impact our environment, our economy, and ultimately, our quality of life.
We need to grow smart. If we build without limits, if we build without borders, without planning, infrastructure and services -- there will be sprawl for all.
We know the decisions made today will shape and define what the future holds for Miami-Dade County. Preserving the Everglades helps ensure clean drinking water. Protecting it conserves hundreds of delicate plant and wildlife species. Restoring it provides new jobs and opportunities for our residents and ensures future generations can visit this beautiful "river of grass".
