The Shelter Plus Care Program provides housing assistance to homeless individuals or families who have a permanent disability––mental illness, substance abuse and/or HIV+/AIDS. The goal of the program is self-sufficiency. Funding for this program is coordinated through the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust. Supportive services provided by sponsors include

• mental health, drug or alcohol abuse treatment
• transportation
• life skills training
• case management, etc.

Eligibility

To qualify for the Shelter Plus Care Program, applicants must

• be 18 years or older;
• be homeless or on the street, in a shelter or in transitional housing;
• have a permanent disability, such as mental illness, substance abuse and/or HIV+/AIDS.
• New admissions must be very low-income (30% or below area median income). See the income limits table for details.
