GIS Mission
The mission of the Enterprise Technology Services Department’s Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Division is to help County departments and government agencies improve service delivery by efficiently
utilizing GIS technology and services.
GIS Vision
Following the County’s vision of “Delivering Excellence Every Day,” the GIS Division strives to maintain
and disseminate the most up to date and accurate enterprise-wide GIS to departments, external agencies and residents.
It is our vision that GIS will continue to grow in value for Miami Dade County as we strive towards
provisioning regional services to municipalities and State agencies.
GIS Program
The success of the County's enterprise GIS is due to many factors. GIS has had the active support of County executives and in the past has had appropriate levels of staffing. GIS is considered a County asset used as a tool to save time, money and lives. It has become essential in business operations of many departments and plays a major role in numerous services offered through Miamidade.gov. As an enterprise technology the program will continue to take a holistic view of GIS infrastructure, data, applications and processes, making all efforts to leverage resources across the County. As demands for increased levels of functionality, availability and reliability continue to escalate so will the complexity of the infrastructure and services offered. Operational needs combined with technology opportunities and ESRI architecture will continue to drive the GIS business plan.
Miami Dade County's GIS User group will continue to meet on a quarterly basis. This forum has proven to be an excellent way of keeping technical staff across the county informed of GIS events, technology changes and new systems. It serves as medium of coordination for GIS activities such as training and GIS day.
In addition to maintaining a technical focus for the GIS User's group. Plans are currently underway to form an executive GIS Steering Committee. The Steering Committee will operate on a more strategic level dealing with countywide GIS policies, procedures, funding and investment priorities.
In 2007, GIS will focus on three primary areas
-
Infrastructure - Strengthening stability and reliability, bringing infrastructure components up to current software releases and developing required expertise in new technologies.
-
Data - Improving and implementing measures for data accuracy and workload measures, redefining methodologies for addressing data issues through innovative uses of technology
-
Growth - Expanding GIS services for County Departments and promoting data exchange partnerships with governments. Establishing a pilot to launch hosting and development services for a municipal government.
