Description: This is a small tree with narrow, alternate leaves and greenish flowers. The fruit is round, about 4 inches wide and is shaped like an artichoke. When it is green, segments of the fruit split, showing a pinkish tinge. The fleshy pulp is slightly sweet with a custard-like consistency. It is a favorite of children. Fruit matures in late July to October.
Size: Small to medium (15-25ft in height)
Location: Plant at least 20 feet from power lines and 10-16 feet from your house. Full sun with well-drained soil.
Salt tolerance: Low
Watering: Water during planting and for one year thereafter (see watering schedule in "Dig In Miami-Dade County" booklet). May need to water during fruiting if under drought conditions.
Fertilization: Do not fertilize until 6 months after planting. Call 305-248-3311 ext.228 for fertilizing information specific to your tree.
Pruning: Wait one year to prune. If staked, remove after 6 months
