    Find out about the latest deployments to the Artificial Reefs network within Miami-Dade County. For all deployment locations, please click on the "Artificial Reef Locator" link on the right.

    More specific information on any of these new deployments (actual orientation of each vessel on the bottom, confirmed depth(s), confirmed center point GPS coordinates, relief or profile - height of structure off the bottom - and digital underwater photos of the ships) from the diving community would be greatly appreciated. Please contact the Artificial Reef Program through e-mail.

    On July 10, 2009, the ninth Eternal Reefs array which consisted of nine memorial Reef Balls was deployed at the Golden Beach Artificial Reef Site. The Reef Balls were deployed in about 43 feet of water approximately one nautical mile east of the Town of Golden Beach. The Reef Balls are adjacent to other Eternal Reef deployments and 3 boulder "patch" reefs.

    On February 20, 2009, the eighth Eternal Reefs array which consisted of 6 memorial Reef Balls was deployed at the Golden Beach Artificial Reef Site. The Reef Balls were deployed in about 43 feet of water approximately 1 nautical mile east of the Town of Golden Beach. The Reef Balls are adjacent to other Eternal Reef deployments and 3 boulder "patch" reefs.

     Miami River Barge

    On November 25, 2008, the Miami River Barge (ZT 202) was deployed at the Key Biscayne Artificial Reef Site. The Miami River Barge, a 210-foot by 35-foot hopper barge, now sits in 120 feet with about 15 feet of relief. The barge lies about 300 feet east of the Sheri Lyn, a 235-foot vessel sunk in 1987 that now rests in two pieces in 100 feet of water.

     DFB Boulder Reef

    From September 26 to October 10, 2008, the Shoreline Foundation, Inc. placed approximately 1,000 tons of 3-5-foot diameter limerock boulders at the Dumfoundling Bay Artificial Reef Site. The boulders were deployed in a multilayer arrangement on the deck of the Miami Beach Seawall Barge (also known as the KMI barge). The barge was deployed in April, 2008 in the eastern portion of the Dumfoundling Bay Artificial Reef site in 38 feet of water. The deck of the barge rests in approximately 33 feet of water. The boulders were placed on the deck of the barge with the highest relief at 18-20 feet.

     Bunnell Seawall

    On September 16, 2008, the Bunnell Foundation, Inc. placed approximately 150 tons of concrete pieces from the old seawall at the Miami Circle site at the Julia Tuttle Artificial Reef Site. The concrete was deployed in 19 feet of water with approximately 6 feet of relief.

     RSMAS Docks - Phase 2

    Concrete slabs and pilings from the second demolition phase of the dock at University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences were deployed on July 29, 2008, into the Julia Tuttle Artificial Reef Site. The concrete was deployed in 17 feet of water with up to 3 feet of relief.

     Sonny's Reef

    On June 26, 2008, approximately 24 concrete pilings 20 feet in length were deployed in the Julia Tuttle Artificial Reef site. The concrete pilings are in 18 feet of water with a relief of 5 feet. This reef was named "Sonny's Reef."

    On April 22, 2008, the Miami Beach Seawall Barge was deployed in the Dumfoundling Bay Artificial Reef Site. The barge lies in a southwest orientation in 35 feet of water with a relief of 7 feet.

     Neptune Memorial Reef - Phase I

    Phase I of the Neptune Memorial Reef project was completed in September of 2007. This reef is located within the Key Biscayne Special Management Zone Artificial Reef Site in 45 feet of water with relief up to 25 feet. For Phase I, approximately 1,000 tons of prefabricated concrete structures and bronze sculptures were precisely deployed as an artistic recreation of the "Lost City of Atlantis" and will serve as a memorial site for the placement of cremated remains.      Bicentennial Park Mitigation

    Nearly 800 tons (585 cubic yards) of lime rock boulders were deployed in the Mercy inshore Artificial Reef Site for the Bicentennial Park Mitigation Project during June and July. The boulders were deployed in 13 feet of water with a final relief ranging from 5 to 7 feet.

     5th Street & Latitude

    Steel bridge pieces from the demolition of the 5th Street bridge over the Miami River were deployed at the Julia Tuttle Inshore Artificial Reef in March 2007. The bridge pieces served as a foundation for the deployment of approximately 466 tons of lime rock boulders placed for the Latitude Mitigation project. This material was deployed in 20 feet of water with a relief of about 10 feet.
