Coming soon to a reef near you: mooring buoys for recreational divers and fishers

DERM is proud to kick off the Miami-Dade County Adopt-a-Buoy Program. These buoys wAdopt-a-Buoyill make it easier for boaters to find recreational diving and fishing spots and secure their boats to these locations without harming our precious reefs! Do you own a business? There are also mooring buoy sponsorship opportunities to promote your business at a very low cost at many of these popular dive sites.

    Water restrictions for Miami-Dade County

Miami-Dade County Commissioners passed an ordinance in April 2009 making the outdoor water restrictions permanent. Most of the rules remain unchanged from those enacted by the South Florida Water Management District in April 2007.

Landscape irrigation for all homes and businesses is still limited to twice a week. Watering is not allowed from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day. Rules have been loosened slightly for newly-planted landscaping.

    Green Ideas

Don't skip "Green" on your red, white and blue day!

Make this 4th of July a "green" celebration on our country's 233rd birthday.

    * Plan your event at dusk. Save energy by having your festivities later in the day and not using a lot of air conditioning to cool a crowded house. Don't forget to bring your eco-friendly mosquito repellant.

    * Buy in bulk. Save money and reduce waste when you buy in large bulk packages instead of individually-wrapped items. Donate or reuse non-perishable leftover items.

    * Use recycled paper goods. Consider choosing paper plates, cups or napkins that contain a percentage of recycled "post-consumer waste." Use non-plastic tablecloths that can be reused for other events.

    * Try a living centerpiece. Instead of buying flowers to decorate your tables, try placing plants that reduce carbon in the atmosphere.

    * Carpool to the event. Arranging carpools will help your friends and family save in gasoline, and is eco-friendly because it reduces carbon emissions.

Check back next week for more "green" ideas.
