    Green Purchasing

    Buy Recycled Content Products!
Recycling does not stop at the collection bin.  To complete the recycling loop, there must be a demand to use the materials everyone is recycling.  It is therefore important to "close the loop" by purchasing products made from recycled materials.  There are currently many items available to you with recycled content, both within the County system as an employee, and outside the County system, as a private consumer.  Next time you purchase something, find out if it is available with recycled content, and if so, specify that you want the product with the recycled content! Visit GSA's Online Catalog to view a list of the items available, including those with recycled content.

Buying recycled products results in many environmental and economic benefits. It supports local recycling programs by creating markets for the collected materials that are processed and used to manufacture new products. This:

    • creates jobs and helps strengthen the economy
    • conserves natural resources
    • saves energy
    • reduces solid waste, air and water pollutants, and greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming

For more information on buying recycled please see the “EPA – Municipal Solid Waste – Buying Recycled” website.

Implement Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP) Initiatives Whenever Possible!
Environmentally Preferable Products are those products or services that have a lesser or reduced effect on human health and the environment when compared with competing products or services that serve the same purpose.  There are many products and services available that provide the same, or even better, level of quality or service, yet have a reduced impact on resources and the environment.  They can even result in a cost savings!  The Committee can help you identify viable opportunities for your operations.
